Hempstead Negro Killed in Clash Over Theft Ring
In Hempstead, about 11 p.m. Sunday, Ernest McGowen was shot to death by Deputy Menke as officers pursued suspects in a hog and cattle theft ring. Willie McGowen, who confessed to involvement, escaped jail and later slashed his throat. he survives under guard and faces trial. It is believed arrests have reduced the theft ring in Waller County.
