The Rev Howard C Wilkinson former minister of Central Methodist Church Shelby N C has been named Duke University chaplain effective July 1 He will head the religious program supervise seven full time associates direct Duke Chapel duties counseling and preaching and serve as college pastor to more than 5000 students annually Wilkinson a Duke Divinity School graduate born June 23 1918 has held multiple church posts in North Carolina and received numerous church and community honors The Shelby News

Houston Woman Killed In Hempstead Area Collision
A Houston woman, Nellie M. Farrell, 47, died in a head on crash on State Highway 299 near Hempstead. Her husband Earl Farrell, 57, was critically injured along with Vernell Price, 21, who faced negligent homicide charges. Two Prairie View A&M students, James White and Henry Manuel, were also injured.

The region saw daily showers for about ten days through Saturday with a Brookshire like rush of 2 inches in 30 minutes. Friday noon brought 8 to 6 inches of rain over Katy in an hour, flooding streets briefly and creating unusually green conditions for Texas.

Car Hits Cow Near Brookshire Causes Minor Injuries
Lt. Thomas Carl Richards driving a 1957 Dodge with a boat and trailer struck a cow on Highway 90 about 2 miles west of Brookshire at 12:30 Monday. The Kellner Estate cattle had escaped. Richards said he misjudged and collided. the car turned on its side with extensive damage, but occupants sustained only minor injuries per Patrolman John Vance.

Humble Oil and Refining Co will spend up to 75000000 dollars to enlarge gas gathering facilities in southwest Texas. The project includes a 750 million cu ft daily processing plant near Corpus Christi with 330 miles of pipelines to Houston and a 300 job new plant.
