Sheriff Ernest Lawrence of Hempstead said his hotel hosts about forty patrons in town on Tuesday. He notes a generally low mood keeps boarders from paying fines, and suggests the county could easily cover such unpaid amounts with its available funds.
The concrete highway between Hempstead and Waller opened last Saturday to the public. It completes Highway 6 to Hempstead and work continues toward the Grimes county line and on no 20 from the Central railroad underpass to the Giddings farm. Hempstead streets soon to get concrete paving enhancing the county seat's progress.
Aaron Hogan a boy about 12 years old, was drowned in the Brazos River last Friday. The body was recovered hours later and Judge A. H. Muske as coroner rendered an accidental drowning verdict. Z. K. Beyler was a Houston visitor Wednesday.
Wednesday night two men stole chickens from Hugo Seidel and others in Brookshire. Mrs. Agopian heard the disturbance, her husband fired several shots, and the culprits fled with three sacks of poultry. The thieves escaped in a Model A Ford with license F1-1137 and reflectors over the headlights.
Mrs W D Bains hosted a Tuesday afternoon reception from 3 to 6 in honor of Mesdames Chas Bennett and B J Longshore. The event featured floral decor, more than 251 guests, confections and punch, with gifts for the honorees and assistance from her mother in law and sister in law.
JF and his wife were in Houston last Sunday, seen at a local venue and dining spot with no further details provided.

The local telephone office will change managers on August first with Mrs Lila James and her daughter Mrs Grace Sullivan leaving to relocate to Houston after supervising the office for over a year. The incoming managers are not named in this notice.
W J Cooper and wife hosted a Sunday birthday dinner for their daughter Mrs C Gra. Guests included D O Martin family J R Garrett and family C Gra Hope Cooper D Matlock K Muske E P Cooper and Roe McPherson. The table overflowed with assorted foods as the honoree received congratulations and good wishes from all.
Mrs D O Martin entertained at a Silver Tea last Wednesday evening to benefit the Methodist Sunday School with barbecued chicken served. Hope Cooper and family, J C Muske and wife and guest EK BH Waggener and wife P J Kuntz and wife were guests.
Miss Elsie Schumacher visits sister in Houston while John Spriggs and wife vacation in Crockett with relatives. Frank Gregor and his wife with daughter Martha shop in Brookshire Wednesday morning. Mrs H A Harvey and daughter Miss Marietta visit friends in Brookshire last Tuesday. Geo Naas and family visited relatives in Anderson over the past weekend.
The Monaville election on increasing school tax from 25 cents to 75 cents was heavily defeated with 99 to 14 against. At Mt Zion box voters went 52 against and 41 for the proposal. Pattison’s prior Saturday tax increase for school purposes also failed, as did votes on water measures.
Mrs E W Streets formerly Mary McAllister of our city writes from Santa Paula California that she entertained Mrs Entrop and her children Miss Alice and Ed who are touring the west. Fred Marti and children of Houston spent Sunday here with Louie Harbison and wife. They were joined by Mildred Harbison returning home. A B Anderson Notary Public seen at The Times Office.
