Public Schools Week runs March 1 to 7 1953 with open houses at Katy Brookshire and Pattison schools. Mayors Miller and Robichaux urge citizen participation to view programs exhibits and student activities and to support educational progress.
The Sam Houston State Teachers College Band will perform in Katy High School Auditorium on March 5, 1953 at 7 30 pm. The seventy three member group tours the Gulf Coast and will play marches overtures popular and classical music. Tickets cost 25 cents for students and 50 cents for adults.
The Youth Department of Katy Methodist Church sponsors a pastry sale starting at 10 a m Saturday at Ann's Gift Shop. For special orders call Mrs Halden Longenbaugh or Donna Jo Thompson in Katy.
Tex J. Foster was named one of ten Outstanding Young Men in the United States for 1952 and spoke at the Brookshire Lions Club meeting. The narcotics activist, 25, has received multiple honors including the Distinguished Service Award from the U S Peace Association and a governor Shivers award for undercover work.
The Brookshire Methodist Church schedules a ground breaking Sunday at 3:00 PM for a new building at the current site. The ceremony, in the old church, will move to the site for the first shovels, with Dr. Stewart Clendenin of the Houston West District attending.
James B. Pattison known as Jimmy died at Memorial Hospital at 7 45 am Sunday February 22 after a short illness He was 38 born December 2 1914 in Pattison son of James M and Winnie Pattison He married Hazel Stasny November 16 1935 and lived his life in Pattison He served in the Texas Legislature representing Waller and Fort Bend counties for two terms and ran for U S representative in the Ninth District last summer He belonged to Pattison Methodist Church Shriner Sons of Confederate Veterans Sons of the Republic of Texas and Woodmen of the World He is survived by his wife his 8 year old son Tarrant his father and stepmother two sisters and two brothers and a grandmother Buried with Masonic services in Pattison Cemetery Funeral directed by Schmidt Funeral Home
Brookshire candidates for trustee must file by March 4 with Supt. R C Waldrip or Judge John C Wintree. Mayor or commissioner filings close March 7. Election set for April 7 in Brookshire and Katy. Robichaux and Brookshire decline re election. Walters also not seeking another term. Encourage voters to support qualified candidates and place names on ballots.
Katy Independent School District will enumerate every child of school age from March 1 to March 31 1953 Those aged six by September 1 1953 or under eighteen on that date qualify A supplemental census will list five year olds for kindergarten consideration for 1953 54 term
The Rev. A. J. Crann, priest of the Immaculate Conception Church in Sealy, died suddenly of a heart attack at 9 45 p m Sunday. Services were held at 10 30 a m Wednesday from his church and he was buried in Sealy Catholic Cemetery.
Coffee Day at local cafes raised $211 for the Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital Fund. Edd's Cafe reported $45, Alexander's $76, and Ft Bend Steak House $90 in coffee sales. Gratitude is sent to workers and patrons for support.
