Hardin Cuts Rice Acreage and Boosts Export Subsidies

Secretary of Agriculture Clifford Hardin announced a 15 percent rice acreage reduction for 1970 after reviewing international markets and domestic demand. The USDA also raised export subsidies by 21 cents for long medium and short grain rice to encourage overseas sales and signaled higher price supports, with the recent $4.81 per hundredweight rate likely to be increased.

Katy Band Boosters Meet Monday Might

Katy High School band parents will gather Monday night February 23 at 7 30 in the band hall. They will vote on the by laws of the Band Booster Club and nominate a committee. The group plans a band banquet and to aid Mr Banks ton at functions. Dues are 50e per person with about 60 members so far. Superintendent J E Taylor was first to sign up. Membership open to all Katy School District residents.

Texas Rice Production Assn Meeting February 26 in Houston

The Texas Rice Production Association will hold its annual member meeting at 10:00 a.m. Thursday February 26 at the Shamrock Hilton Convention Center in Houston. M W Mauritz president urges all Texas rice farmers to attend as directors are elected. Raymond Joanes of Washington DC will deliver the principal address and Rice Council staff will report on promotion activities. A luncheon will conclude the gathering.

French Club Sponsors Faculty Volleyball Game at Katy High

The French Club sponsors a faculty volleyball game Thursday February 26 at 7 30 p m in the Katy High School gym. Admission will aid fundraising. Dennis Laxton is the French teacher and club sponsor. About 80 students are enrolled in the two French classes.

Time To Get License Plates for Harris and nearby counties

Harris County residents may obtain plates at Miller Motor with a check or money order and pick them up. Waller County residents should visit The Specialty Shop in Brookshire. Mail orders accepted until March 1. Send forms to the county tax collector. Fort Bend residents mail to Richmond. If you lack the form, bring last year’s registration and your title.

Salvation Army Drive Brings In Over $500 In Waller County

Jim Buller of McGregor Lane Salvation Army Chairman reports a local drive raising over 500 dollars for county emergencies. Funds stay in the county for local relief and have aided a citizen who lost a home in a fire. He thanks workers and contributors in the 1969 1970 Drive.

Marvin J. Brown and D. G. Thompson announced winners of gifts from a six week Valentine celebration at Katy Gulf Service Station. First prize portable television went to R. A. Mrs Irene Fishbeck reports the Brookshire Firemen Ladies Auxiliary raised 1300 through activities for the Veeck Fund. The funds were applied toward the purchase of the chassis for the department's new fire truck.

The Royal Independent School District trustees set a Saturday April 4 1970 election to fill Positions 3 and 4, currently held by Calvin Ehlert and Mrs Fevelyn Streckfuss. Filing deadline is 4 p.m. March 4 at the superintendent's office in Royal High School. Absentee voting runs March 15 to March 31 at the school tax office 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

City Sells Police Car In Katy Auction Brightens Budget

The City of Katy sold a wrecked police car to Bruce Hyde for 480 dollars, with 440 and 425 dollar bids from other bidders. Bid openings occurred February 12 during a regular meeting. Mayor Mort Watts announced city planning reviews and a March work show. Houston Natural Gas notified a rate increase effective March 1 1970. Bills may rise under new rates by less than 5 percent. Planning committee reviews proposed subdivisions per Caldwell Associates. Municipal Court filed 15 cases in January.

Beloved Priest Father Lad Klimicek Dies at 63

The Reverend Father Lad Klimicek age 63 pastor of Our Lady of Frydek Church Frydek died at the parish rectory on Friday February 13 1970 at 105 a.m. He was born in Weimar Texas April 4 1906 and ordained in 1941. A Solemn Requiem Mass was offered February 16 at 1030 a.m. with Bishop Louis J Reicher presiding. Interment was in St Michael's Cemetery Weimar. He helped start the Frydek Grotto Celebration and served parishes in Houston Granger Wallis and West before Frydek.

Tragic Death Of 18-Year-Old Charles Courville In Katy Crash

Charles Joseph Courville 18 died in a Sunday early morning crash near Katy when his pickup struck a bridge at FM 629 and Katy Hockley Road just before 1 00 a m Feb 15 1970. Deputy Templeton investigated with Schmidt ambulance summoned and Patrolman Cardwell in charge. Courville body taken to Harris County morgue.
