Slater Martin to Guest Star at Katy Firemen Game

Katy Firemen's Old Pros versus Katy FFA charity basketball game slated for Saturday night February 18 at 8 pm in the Katy gym. Guest star Slater Martin, recently retired from the St Louis Hawks after 13 pro seasons, will appear. Rotary Quartet and Skeet Poorman will perform at halftime. event aims to raise funds for equipment upgrades and volunteer firemen support.

City Officials To Be Elected On April 4

Brookshire and Katy voters head to the polls on April 4 for mayor and two commissioner races. Incumbents Frank Stallknecht Jack Donald and E A Hitt in Brookshire and A O Miller Joe K Moore and Buck Freeman in Katy seek reelection. Nominating deadline is March 4 and candidates must file at city secretaries offices.

Donald Stewart moved his shop into the Solomon building on Otto Street last week. His former Front Street shop was damaged by fire on January 1 of this year.

Scout Troop 370 Sets Broom and Mop Sale Tomorrow

Scout Troop 370 plans a broom and mop sale next Wednesday from 4 to 6 pm at Schmidt Furniture Store. Fifteen boys will also canvass the Brookshire Patti son area to raise funds for troop expenses, with proceeds shared with The Lighthouse for the Blind which makes the items. Articles include brooms mops coat hangers damp iron bags dish cloths and ironing board covers.

More Streets In Brookshire Designated For Improvement

Streets in Brookshire slated for curb and gutter work in 1961 include the south and west sides of Block 82 Kellner and Fratt Street from Fifth to Seventh and three connecting streets. Property owners on those streets will receive notices detailing their share of the improvement costs.

The Katy Fire Department asks Katy citizens to avoid calling the fire line before 10 minutes after alarm and to keep clear of fire scenes. It cites a recent Lammert Apartments blaze where cars blocked access, risking worse damage. The letter warns hindering is a punishable offense and urges cooperation to keep lines open and comply with fire personnel.

License Plates Go On Sale This Week

License plates went on sale in Brookshire February 15. The 1961 plates are black on white for better distant readability. To obtain them quickly, bring a certificate of title and last year's registration receipt. Miller Motor Co. in Katy had not received plates yet. Texas ranked third nationwide with 4,800,000 registered vehicles in 1960 per the Texas Highway Department.

Services Held For Mrs J A Bartlett Saturday Morning

Funeral services for Mrs Zoe Irene Bartlett were held at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel with Rev Richard Jenkins officiating. Interment followed at Katy Magnolia Cemetery. She died February 9 at 3 a.m. in a Spring Branch hospital after an extended illness. She was 71. Born August 24 1889 in Illinois she moved to Texas as a child and married Jacob A Bartlett at 16. Survivors include her husband two sons a daughter five grandchildren seven great grandchildren and other relatives. Pallbearers were named. Her early work in home demonstration and 4 H led to the first Katy 4 H Girls Leader around 1915.

Blue and Gold Cub Pack 370 Banquet Honors Local Cubs

About 60 attendees gathered Friday for Brookshire Cub Pack 370 Blue and Gold Banquet. Bobcat badges were presented by Cubmaster Ian Rheman to Mark England, Mike Lock, Michael Mayberry, John Phillips and Barry Turner, with four later earning Wolf Badges alongside Stanley Ford and R. L. Lowe. Special guests included Mrs. R. N. Ritchey receiving a Cub service plaque, along with committee members and Dr. and Mrs. J. J. Hopkins. The event featured two dens’ skits, a song fest, and the 51st Scout birthday cake at a decorated head table. Den mothers Mary Rheman, E. D. Turner, John Rowe, John England, and Kenneth McDonald prepared the covered dish menu.

Rice-bound Katy Tiger Ace McDonald signs pre-enrollment

Stanley McDonald the Katy Tigers football captain, 6'3" 190 pounds, signed a pre-enrollment application to play at Rice. A four year Tigers veteran, he earned All District honors the past three years and All State this year. He is National Honor Society, Student Council president, and active in many activities. son of Mr. and Mrs. John McDonald.

City of Brookshire Buys Street Sweeper

At their regular meeting last Monday the Brookshire City Council purchased a street sweeper from Hi way Equipment Co of Houston. An old sweeper was traded in. An operator will be hired in the near future.

Waller County Designated for Emergency Farmer Loans

Waller County will authorize emergency loans for eligible farmers affected by adverse weather. State Director Walter T. McKay announced the program to provide credit when traditional sources fail.
