Walter A. Ebel, a Brookshire boy, survived the torpedoing of the transport Tuscania off Ireland by a German submarine on Feb 5. He had been drafted from the county in October, trained at Camp Travis, and is among the first selectives from the county sent to France. He is the son of Bill Ebel, a local German farmer.
