VEW Park Faces Loss of Eighteen Trees and More Expected

The Katy VFW Post reports eighteen trees died in VEW Park with twelve or more additional trees likely to die within two years. They plan immediate action including removal of dead trees, pruning the rest, and planting fifteen live oaks at fifty dollars each, funded by donations and a contract with Trees of Houston for the full job plus guarantees. The effort aims to protect a park used by families and groups, as dwindling funds prompt community support.

Brookshire Lions See Films On Fertilizer

The Brookshire Lions Club met with 34 members for an evening session led by Louis McCauley as program chairman. Von Heeder screened two informative fertilizer films from Houston’s Fertilizer Works. Four new members were welcomed: H. Q. Bundick, A. W. Buckner, D. R. Daniel Jr., and J. G. Roden, with G. T. Shearer, Sr. reinstated as an active member. Brookshire PTA ladies prepared and served dinner chaired by Mrs. E. D. Turner and others.

Boy Scout Troop 209 holds a Court of Honor at the High School visual aid room at 7 30 p m Monday February 18 1957. Two Local Girls Named to 1957 All-State Bands

Maggie Lou Brown and Marion Williams earned spots in the 1957 All-State Bands. Brown joins the Reading Band under Al G. Wright in Dallas February 13 to 16, while Williams participates with the Concert Band under Frederick Finnell. The Concert Band performs February 15 at Fair Park Auditorium.

Katy Schools Valentine Pageant Crowned Queen and King

Doyce Greason and Johnny Nelson will be crowned Queen and King at 8 tonight February 14 in a Valentine pageant by Katy Schools with Katy PTA sponsorship. Mrs W G Wiley is general chairman. The Champ Largest Steer Exhibit Comes to Sealy High

The Champ, an 84 foot mobile lifelike Hereford steer, will tour the country to educate about beef production. It arrives Tuesday February 19 at Sealy High School from 1 to 4 pm, free to the public. Visitors walk through the body to see how feed becomes beef and how milk and calf development occur.

Mrs Poorman Jr Injured in Rural Riding Accident

Herschel Poorman Jr Deloras Nelson and Sonny Nelson were herding cows when the horse, about 19 years old, apparently suffered a heart attack and fell, knocking Deloras unconscious. She was taken to Herman Hospital by Schmidt Ambulance. No broken bones found but bruises. She returned home Monday evening.

Brookshire Postal Receipts Show Yearly Gain in 1956

Brookshire postmaster W. D. Bain reports postal receipts for 1956 totaled 11376, up from 10659 in 1955. He notes growth shown by comparing recent totals with those from earlier years, with 1936 receipts listed at 2695.
