Katy mayor CG I Buck Freeman announces he will not seek re election citing inability to balance duties with his farming business. He has served two years as mayor and previously two years as a councilman. Sid Creech seeks reelection. Mert Watts has not filed.
A 42 Party is set for Thursday night February 13 at 6 45 PM in Odd Fellow Hall. Everyone is invited to enjoy refreshments and prizes for high and low scorers with a donation of 1 dollar to the benevolent fund.
Brookshire Chamber of Commerce deliberated on continuing the organization after criticism of low attendance and dues. President Ed Griffin and Secretary Mrs. Whitt Bains led the session, noting donations for basketball trophies but few workers, and a plan to recruit new members for 1969, with Mary Margaret Henry volunteering.
Five candidates announced for Katy School Board positions No. 3 4 and 5 as of noon Tuesday. Incumbent Harry W. Brown seeks re election for No. 4 while Glen Fry and Melvin L. Scott do not seek re election for No. 3 and No. 5 respectively. Candidates for No. 3 are Carl E. Allen L. J. Hol Moffett and Oscar M. Fraley. Absentee voting runs March 10 to April 1 with office hours 8 am to 4 pm in the Administration Building.
The Royal Parent Teachers Association schedules a 7:30 p.m. gathering February 20 at the Royal High School Auditorium. The Executive Board will meet at 4:00 p.m. February 19. A decision on forming a Royal PTA will be discussed, and an educational film The Neglected will be shown at the February 20 meeting.
The Dry Ice will play at the Katy Youth Center on Saturday February 15 from 9 to 12 midnight at the VFW Community Center in Katy.
The 1969 VFW Post 9182 Pancake Supper served over 200 attendees with advance tickets and donations pushing revenue above 600 dollars. Organ music accompanied a program by Elnora Hudgens, Danny Bellamy, and Dee Kaechele, with organs provided by Holcombe Lindquist of Houston. Proceeds fund extra tables and chairs for the post.
The City of Katy schedules a hearing today on the annexation of about 150 acres along the city northern western and southern borders including four strips along Interstate 10. The regular city meeting will follow.
The Red Masked Players of Katy High School stage three teen themed one act plays on February 13 and 16 at 7:30 PM in the Katy High School Auditorium. Presale tickets cost 60 cents for students and 75 cents for adults, with door prices 76 cents and $1.00. About 60 youths take part in acting, stage work, advertising and ticket sales, led by sponsor Elwood Williamson.
A Katy Little League Mothers fundraiser hosts a barbecued chicken dinner Sunday February 16 1969 from 118 to 200 pm at Katy VEW Center. Chef team includes Jac Kk Moore Rusty Mansell and Jack Miser, with menu of chicken potato salad green beans spiced peach hot bread dessert tea or coffee. Mrs Joe K Moore chairs and aims to buy equipment for the shack. Congressman George Bush will speak to Katy High School Friday at 114 pm and present a flag. Parents and the public are invited.
The note suggests organizers hope profits from a dinner will fund regular Little League operations and enable more practice fields, hoping supporters recognize the benefit and contribute further.
In Katy tonight and Saturday at 7 30 p m the Katy High School Drama Club presents three one act plays headlined by Once Upon A Playground. Cast includes Leonard Arnold Kathy Shuh Marilyn Hacayashi Theresa Jordan Terri Miser Belva Fussell and Lynn Wilkerson.
Rice producers gather February 18 at 7 30 p m in Katy for a joint Harris and Waller County program. Burl Richardson and Rayford G Kay County Agents announce Dr James Stansel from the Rice Pasture Research Center will discuss light studies and fertilization findings. R J Hodges Texas A M agronomist will cover fertilization and production. Open to all.
Woodmen of the World in Brookshire plan a 42 tournament Monday February 24 at 7 30 pm at the UD Ranch Club near the old Clemons school. Open to men and women trophies will be awarded and registration details will be announced next week.
Local Katy Little League urges all 10 11 and 12 year old boys to attend Saturday February 5 at 9 00 a m for tryouts at Katy Little League field. A follow up meeting for interested players and parents is planned Thursday February 20 at 7 00 p m in Katy Elementary Cafetorium.
The Katy PTA meets Monday night February 17 at 7 30 in the Elementary Cafetorium. Hostesses are Mrs Lloyd Frazier Mrs Oscar Fraley Mrs A V Meadows Mrs Gene Andrews and Mrs Ernest Bode. The program Values in the Family will be a panel discussion moderated by Mrs Pat Adams with Rev Glen Montgomery Chief of Police Pat Adams Mrs George Rehman and Gayle Culling as panelists. The president Mrs Wesley Thomas hopes for strong attendance.
The Waller County Teachers Association will meet at 7 30 Monday at Hempstead High School Roche Laboratories with Swiss reps promoting Narvatics use. Jack Morrigan of the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, who has worked with the Narcotics Board, will be the speaker. The public is invited.
The Waller County Tax Office adopts new hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a noon break, Monday through Friday, starting February 24 1969. On Mondays the office will stay open until 6 p.m. Le Roy Symm says the extension aims to give more residents access to the office.
Leon Bienski and Vance Hare oversee 31 soil samples from Brookshire Katy area farms while over 136 samples were gathered in Waller County by school youth. Burl Richardson notes samples go to the Texas A&M soils lab. A February barbecue honors youth for soil sampling with trophies for top collectors.
