The Brookshire Lions Club sponsors a 42 party at Brookshire School Cafeteria on Friday the 13th. Progres sive 42 will award gifts to top and bottom scorers for men and women. Tickets cost one dollar with light refreshments. admissions at door if not prepaid. Game time 7 30 p.m.
Nearly 300 visitors attended the Johnson Lumber Co grand opening last Saturday. Owners Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Johnson and manager Mrs. Bessie Bauer led the event with hostesses Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Johnson. Cook’s Paint and Varnish contributed two representatives. George Roesner of KPRC TV provided music and film clips for Cook’s TV show.
Rev Jon A Pirtle will lead a revival at First Baptist Church of Katy from February 15 to 27. An Atlanta evangelist, he has preached in Katy before, with Chas Stewart praising his gospel ministry. Services include morning and evening worship with nursery available, directed by Brother Dalton Stewart, inviting locals to attend.
On February 12 last year a heavy night snow blanketed the town. Morning reports noted widespread snowfall and many residents built snowmen as daytime temperatures rose, helping melt the white covering by evening.
The Sweetheart Showboat arrives at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday February 13 and 14 at the Katy School Auditorium. The Katy PTA sponsors a Royal Court pageant with Queen Mary Ann Chesnutt and King Ronald Davis Friday followed by musical numbers from elementary grades. Saturday features Queen Laura Ann Miller and King Richard Woods with high and junior high students performing. Admission 25 or 30 cents.
Don Crumpler, owner of Southland Rollercade, offers skating classes in Katy at the old gym each Saturday starting February 21. Girls and others can earn a scout skating merit badge with written tests later. beginners learn fundamentals with emphasis on posture rhythm and balance.
The Brookshire Katy Fulshear Shrine Club hosts a Shriner Crippled Children program on Saturday March 14 at Katy School Auditorium. Proceeds and donations aid the Shriners Crippled Children Hospital in Houston and surrounding area. William Vollus spoke at the Rotary Club about hospital work. Arabia Temple Divan members urged fundraising. Local Shriners will sell show tickets by week’s end.
New car licenses went on sale Monday in Brookshire. They are available at Edmondgon Drug, handled by L. B. Tubbs. Passenger cars TM 6275 to TM 9149, trucks 39250 to 359449, and farm trucks SW 9600 to SW 9849. Bring last year’s registration receipt and title certificate with your request.
Rotary International President Clifford A. Randall will address the Downtown Rotary Club at noon Thursday at the Rice Hotel. Guests attending include Katy Rotary President Carey Pitts Mrs Pitts Secretary Fred Rylander and Mrs Rylander.
The First Methodist Church of Katy plans an expansion costing about 305000 dollars to add 9200 square feet of educational space a 600 seat sanctuary a new parsonage and extra parking on adjacent land. Construction aims for 8 to 6 years while a fundraising drive continues led by Louise Schliph J D Woods D E Elder James Morton Q E Rhoads A E Robichaux Albert Thompson John Cardiff J E Hudgens L S Bacon and pastors Rev Richard W Jenking and Gregory T Longenbaugh.
At a Monday night meeting the Pattison Brookshire School Board named R C Waldrip as permanent Assistant Superintendent or Business Manager and M F Dollar as principal and acting superintendent until a formal appointment is announced. Applications for the superintendent post are being received.
Pattison PTA hosts Harris County Civil Defense Director Jess L. Caveness as guest speaker on civil defense responsibilities for schools. Students from first to third grades perform a Valentine program as the community gathers for a timely briefing and social hour.
Katy High School will take part in a county wide pupil testing program as a pilot for a national talent search. Ninth graders at Katy will be tested March 1 through April 15 in seven areas including data sheet, vocabulary, interests, personality, family background, and sociometric tests. Dr Wayne Holtzman of the Hogg Foundation says results will help guide guidance and counseling, with data returned to local schools this spring.
Waller County reports 2150 poll tax payments collected this election year with 20 exemption certificates issued. Collector LeRoy Symm says receipts are 400 less than the typical election year total.
Two day Sub-District 4-H Leader Tractor School was held at Miller Motor Co in Katy. Sponsored by Humble Oil and Refining Company with Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the program aimed to develop leadership, share knowledge among 4-H members and tractor owners, teach safe economical operation, and promote efficient use of tractors and farm machinery. E M House of Humble welcomed participants and county agents.
The VFW Post plans its regular meeting on February 17 and urges all members to attend. A building program is under way and other business will be discussed. The Post donated all deer meat for Veterans Dinners to the Star of Hope Mission but the amount fell short of sponsoring a dinner.
