Brookshire volunteers battled a fire that destroyed the Billy Harrison Lounge early Monday. Fire crews from Katy and Sealy aided, four hours of effort prevented damage to neighboring structures, and owner Billy Harrison estimates losses at around 50 000 with partial insurance coverage.
Tex La Construction Co digging sewer lines in Brookshire unearthed a glass jar containing negotiable currency on 5th street across from the Adam Biji home. The money is believed to be the lifetime savings of Christie Williams who died here years ago. A coin dated 1901 was among the scattered bills totaling about 150 dollars with a worker retrieving 87.50.
The Katy PTA sponsors the Queen of Hearts Carnation event in the Katy High School Auditorium on Friday night February 13 at p.m. A 25 cent adult and 10 cent child admission will cover decorations and costumes. Talent from the school presents the program.
Sacred Heart Church announces Mass times on Sundays the 2nd and 4th at 8 a.m. and on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays at 1 a.m. The wording indicates varied timings per week.
The Brookshire Independent School Board ordered an election to elect two trustees. The vote will be held on Saturday April 4. Incumbents Arthur Robichaux and A K Brookshire will not seek re election. Applications may be filed with Superintendent R C Waldrip or Judge John C Winfree at Hempstead.
Memorial Lutheran Church in Katy completes purchase of rear property from Otto Busch to house a future pastor. After seven years as a Pattison mission, the Katy congregation becomes independent with a vacancy filled by a Pattison pastor until a new one arrives. Immanuel Hempstead and Christ Pattison join as a parish served by Pattison pastor beginning March 1.
Brookshire voters will choose mayor and commissioners on April 7 1953. Filing closes March 7 with applications to City Secretary David Agopian. Mayor Arthur Robichaux will not seek reelection and urges civic participation.
The Texas Hardware and Implement Association held its annual convention at the Shamrock Hotel in Houston from January 26 to 28. Over 1600 dealers and suppliers from Texas attended. 109 booths showcased equipment and products as members elected next year’s venue in San Antonio.
Katy volunteers report reaching their fundraising goal of 6880.50 for a new fire station library and meeting room. Additional contributions are welcome. Last week they lacked funds and Tuesday the volunteers hauled tile from Elgin for the building. Next meeting is Thursday February 12.
Alan Ronald Carmichael of Brookshire is noted as a member of the runner up team in the intramural bowling contest at the University of Texas in Austin. Carmichael, a pharmacy junior, is the son of Ada Carmichael.
Mr James Cooper and Mrs Cooper are moving their residence to Houston Texas from an unspecified location. The notice notes a household relocation with no stated month date or prior address.
The Mothers March on Police in Katy raised about 850 dollars on January 29, with 607.50 total in Katy and 72.50 from coffee sales at the Ft Bend Steak House, 25 at Alexander's Cafe, and 145 from other donations. The Katy Scout Troop marks the 43rd anniversary of the Boy Scout movement with church rites in uniform at 11 a.m. February 8 led by Reverend Ford Dawson. Scouts meet at the Scout House before marching to Katy Methodist Church for Colors ceremony and rededication.
Mr and Mrs Thomas Sills visited his sister and family Mr and Mrs Cecil Goynes in Katy last Saturday. Thom as, a polio survivor, was briefly out of the hospital each week for a short period.
Eighty Future Home Makers and Future Farmers from Katy will attend the Houston Fat Stock Show on Saturday February 7. Two F F A boys will show in the Houston Show with David Baker showing a Registered Jersey Bull and Raymond Franz showing turkeys in the Fat Poultry Show. They will both compete in the Dairy Scramble with Rolland Roulston and Jimmy Sparks as alternates.
The Katy Tigers host the Tomball Cougars Friday night in the Ka ty gym. The A game starts soon after. Katy has 3 district wins and 2 losses while Spring Branch leads the district undefeated and Tomball sits second with losses to Spring Branch.
Brookshire civic groups plan a community building or fire station. A meeting is set for Wednesday February 18 at the school house. Committees include Fire Department members Jack Donald A O Muske Frank Gostecnik Lions Club reps Pete Pederson John England J C Day Business and Professional Women's Club Corrie Tatum Kathryn Harrison Ada Armichael city council and Andrew Highrabedian to draw the plans.
