Citizens of Tomorrow photo days at Katy and Brookshire

The Times invites mothers to bring children for free portraits on Friday February 4 at the Katy office and Saturday February 5 at the Brookshire office from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A photographer will take pictures and readers will later select ones for the paper with optional purchases.

Rice Farmers Vote To Retain Federal Controls

Texas rice growers approved government production limits for the 1955 crop by an 3,269 to 487 margin, a nationwide nine to one vote. The program sets marketing quotas and supports near 90 percent parity, with about 25,000 farmers eligible to vote. Rice area would drop to 1,958,099 acres, 24.7 percent below last year.

Brookshire District Plans Second Water Well and Upgrades

Brookshire Municipal Water District announces bids to drill a second water well for the city plus extensions to water lines. The new well aims to provide backup if the current one fails, with lines to be installed east of Fulshear road toward the city limits. The district board includes M. Pederson as president, Max Wander as vice president, J. C. Day as secretary, and members Richard Woods and C. J. Rheman.

Katy Girl Picked for 4-H Farm Youth Exchange Trip

Lolita Buchanan 21, daughter of Mr and Mrs J M Buchanan of Katy, chosen to represent Texas and the United States as a 4 H girl in the International Farm Youth Exchange Program. She will travel to England and Wales April 1 to Sept 1 to live with farm families and share American customs.

Katy Band Student Earns All State honors

Marion Williams a Katy High School sophomore was chosen from Region V for the All State Band meeting in Dallas February 9 10 and 11. She ranked high in the all district audition and was one of four clarinetists in the district band to try out for Region Band. Other Katy Band members making all district were Joyce Gleason Jean Miller Betty Baker Hugh Sims and Hoyt Pierce.

Chickens Gumbo Dinner Raises 104 For Polio

The March of Dimes Chicken Gumbo dinner sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Russell raised 104 dollars for the Polio Foundation. Contributions included 5 chickens from Jack Sims, 2 from Mrs. Bert Gassner, 1 from Joe Paley, and the Russells provided the remaining 10. Foremost Creameries supplied coffee cream and Holsum Bread Co. the bread.

Katy Specialty Co has acquired a business lot across from its current site. Ground bought from Ray Woods. A 42 by 75 masonry building is drafted and will be ready soon. The plan expands into full scale interior decorating with a modern furniture area behind a glass front. Construction starts within sixty days.

Polio Drives Reported in Brookshire and Pattison

The 1955 March of Dimes drive totals show Brookshire at 554.37 and Pattison at 270.00 with incomplete figures pending more donations. Pattison chair Mrs L S Thomas and Brookshire head Arthur Robichaux credit volunteers from Katy Gas Plant and local groups for efforts including a chicken gumbo dinner and Cub Scout march.

Wess Buller Receives Life Membership at Salt Grass Trail

Wess Buller Sr a Salt Grass Trail rider was awarded a life membership at Salt Grass Trail Again in Waller County Hospital on Sunday. Trail boss Reese Lockett presented the certificate as Buller missed his third ride due to an accident. About 400 guests visited, with Mrs. Buller noting a record of visitors this time after a similar accident 15 years ago.
