Quarantine Guards Appointed on County Roads
Captains Chas. Heack and E. H. Wentworth were named quarantine guards by the city and county boards of health. They set guards on four roads into Brookhaven from the west and at six Lincoln line points along Jefferson and Franklin. They traveled 60 miles to station guards with twelve county and eight city guards. Franklin county also placed guards at the Homochitto bridges and fords to block western passage as refugees flee towns into the countryside.

Smallpox In East Lincoln Reported By Health Officer
Dr 8. G. Wilson, county health officer, reports eight smallpox cases in eastern Lincoln county among white families Stevens and Maxwell. Cases are quarantined with vaccination efforts underway. A man named Williams in Lawrence county with confluent smallpox is also isolated.

Washington on September 19. The Interior Department Assistant Attorney General heard arguments in Scott versus Dumas over whether Mississippi Choctaw Indians retain rights as citizens of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory.
