A dated miscellany charges belief in progress with a poem and notes on public figures. Roosevelt is noted as the youngest president at 45 after McKinley’s assassination, with commentary on politicians, crime, and public behavior. The column mixes quotes, local editorials, and literary musings about biography and life.
Memorial Day on the Central railway system halted at 2 PM as orders from Vice President Harraban blocked trains near Canton. Rev. Hamlett of Grenada led a prayer in a makeshift sanctuary aboard, while the hymn Nearer My God to Thee rose with the clatter of wheels. Governor A H Longino of Mississippi, famed for anti lynching stances, visited Cleveland and discussed law enforcement against mob violence with editor A Lewenthal and locals. He urged stronger public sentiment for enforcing laws and tackling lynching, emphasizing that the South is already moving to resolve the issue. Secretary Hester’s cotton crop report shows total production at a record value with Mississippi contributing 900,000 bales, and Southern mills consuming most of the yield.
A friend writes of President Roosevelt describing him as energetic and disciplined. He is tall and muscular with a boyish look behind glasses, quick-minded and reserved yet kindly and optimistic. His life spans frontier hunting, ranching, and military service, shaping a figure praised by cowboys and frontiersmen alike. He follows Lincoln's motto to do his best.
The piece discusses Southern attitudes toward President Roosevelt, noting widespread belief in his favorable view of the South. It cites references from his early career, mentions speeches about Southern heroes, and recalls wartime loyalty debates. It also includes Mississippi notes on civic happenings and local incidents.
