Tare on Cotton Aims for Net Weight Victory
The New Orleans Cotton Exchange leads a convention involving exchanges from New Orleans to Macon to regulate tare on cotton. Leaders including R C Patty and J H Beeman backed a plan to sell cotton at net weight from October 1 1889, allowing 24 pounds off grease weight for jute bagging and 16 pounds off for cotton bagging, effectively favoring cotton bagging and phasing out jute. The note explains how tare affects price per pound and asserts net weight sales align with current exporter practices. Kate Lee Ferguson, author of Cliquot, is discussed as an additional notable item.
