Week ending Nov 26 shows state cases disposed in Justice Daughtry's court. Jonas Davis fined 2.50 and cost for gaming. Ed Carter listed for gaming. Walter Blue fined 1.00 and cost for disturbing the peace. Jennie Polk fined 2.50 and cost for disturbing the peace. Lee Jones jailed for drunk. Barbara Reed fined 2.50 and costs for disturbing the peace.
Cotton picking ends as the school plans a fall reopening. Teacher Williamson moves into a new house this week and a building boom continues with Bakcom Laird preparing a residence east of the Academy. Hohlstein takes Bascom’s house, Albert Evans plans a new home, and the 1904 start is set. Grades 1-4 return to the old building under Alderman while the new building houses academics under Williamson. A music program opens with a specialist. Williamson will take boarders after December 1, with Low teaching bookkeeping and shorthand starting December 1. Lectures begin with Rev Crislers on the 26 and a citizenship lecture by the principal.
Tomorrow features Baptist morning and evening services with an 11 oclock children service and 730 pm sermon by the pastor. Catholic services conduct at 10 pm and 4 pm led by Rev Kiernan. A Y M C A men’s meeting is planned at four o’clock with Rev Purser as speaker. Local notices mention Christmas goods at R J Boones, cotton pricing, and community engagements across Meridian Brookhaven Crystal Springs and Johnson Academy.
Mississipp i Woman's Christian Temperance Union holds its annual Canton meeting delayed by weather with delegates fewer than usual. Miss Belle Kearney spoke on accountability, Mrs Caliie Howe discussed organization fundamentals, and Mrs Harriet B. Wells delivered the annual address. Officers reelected include Wells as President and Weatherston, Cox, and Stanley in key roles.
Thanksgiving in Brookhaven saw businesses shut and streets busy like a Sunday. Many locals hunted or visited nearby towns while a union service at the Methodist church featured Rev. H. G. Hawkins delivering a scholarly sermon. A collected 33.70 was divided among the Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian Orphan Asylums of the state.
A young Rankin county man O E Easterling was arrested in Natchez by Officer Gordon and jailed in Jackson on a mother in law theft charge. The Times Democrat notes marriage licenses issued by Circuit Clerk Oliver including Whites and Colored couples. Also reports a Thanksgiving service in Kentwood led by Rev. Porser, a Wowsa Meeting guest of honor, and a dubious claim by a country editor about a nationwide country newspaper trust.
The white cap group returns to the southwest Lincoln county area firing on black homes. Eli Hilson’s seven mile Brookhaven farm and Henry Liste’s Gum Grove negro home were riddled with bullets. Liste died after the attack, while Hilson’s family survived as a newborn rested nearby. Reports say disbandment after last summer’s campaign was false.
James A. White once of Brookhaven, born and raised there, was acquitted of killing a prominent man named Johnson in Cordell Oklahoma where Mr. Kite edited a paper. The grand jury initially refused to indict but pressure from a partisan judge and friends of the dead man led to a true bill. White's trial ended yesterday with a not guilty verdict. John L. White conveyed the glad news to Brookhaven.
The Brookhaven mayor's court disposed of several cases this week including A BE Walsh profanity fined five dollars, Luther Baker profanities fined two fifty, and Squire Miller fighting fined ten dollars plus costs. A card of thanks from G MBraxe and family expresses gratitude for support during their son's illness. Mr J W Steen found a Mexican weevil specimen and sent it to Houston Post for classification awaiting results.
