Tomato industry outlined for local farmers
In an interview, F P Tooker, treasurer of the Canning Factory, reports contracts with truckers for 50 to 75 acres in the first year. Growers would receive 5 cents per bushel for marketable tomatoes. With careful cultivation, one acre could yield about 20 barrels of marketable fruit, comparable to cotton at 10 cents per pound. Several farmers plan to plant multiple acres, while a few consider beans for early shipment to northern markets as minimal extra cost.
