Curious discovery of old California journals near Martines
In Martines area near Alhambra and Walnut Creek a search unearthed four ancient books wrapped in salt and buried near an oak. The items include a California Assembly journal, a report from the Joint Committee on the conduct of the war, and two private letters with neat handwriting. The find hints at archival traces of early California and questions about how journals reached this spot. Local talk notes horse and cattle theft as persistent crime, with calls for better policing and a telegraph link to deter thieves. A state census report estimates California’s population around 117,400 in November after a long migration since 1847, with Sacramento County at about 11,000 depending on later figures.
