Mrs Zaralda Samagle, mother of Jesse and Frank James, sold her Kearney Neb home for exhibition at the World's Fair. A storm at Greenville Pa shattered a church steeple during a sermon. A shooting affray near Wheeling WV left Miss S dead, Miss Kate Kinney and George West wounded. An Evansville Ind quake panic caused churchgoers to flee. London theater men plan New York land purchases for a hotel and stores. Charles M Osborne hanged in Atlanta Ga for 1805 murder. Anerson Storms Manson Anderson killed Morehead Ky constable.
Dana Neb July 25 A letter says G Gerber long resident in Omaha was exiled to Siberia by Russian authorities after fleeing from Myszynga to avoid arrest. He claimed US citizenship, but was sentenced to one year in Lomazy jail and five years banishment with confiscation of property. He hoped to return to Omaha to start anew.
In Nutt Island Massachusetts July 24 a burned old warship Brooklyn attracted observers. Built 1864 by Westervelt Co New York she served in the Civil War including the New Orleans blockade and Farragut’s ascent of the Mississippi. After collision, Fort St Philip fire and Fort Fisher acts, later aided an Alabama capture. Old Brooklyn sailed to New York by sail after breaking a main shaft then to Portsmouth Va where she was condemned in 18su. Thomas Butler Co bought her and brought to Boston.
In Knoxville a tense stand off among coal miners and authorities ended after a miners' committee met at the Lamar house. Resolutions drafted by Dennis Leahy were approved by Knoxville citizens and delivered to Gov. Hachaway and Attorney-General Pickel. A peace meeting followed and convicts are allowed to work without interference until an extra legislative session acts. Militia will be withdrawn and miners will refrain from further disruption.
A massive fire swept the Campbell and Elliott woolen and cotton mill at Washington Avenue and Twelfth Street, destroying the 200 by 200 foot building. Loss estimated between 750000 and 800000 dollars, likely insured. Firefighters and volunteers confined the blaze to the mill. over 480 workers left jobless. The building housed inflammable material and burned rapidly.
