Kleinpell, a Madison native with a wife and four children, was found dead in a city news and book store on East Eleventh Street after failing three times to take his own life. He opened gas burners, hung, and attempted suicide with ropes and knives, leaving blood on the floor. He had been in business eight years and had been drinking heavily recently.
Preliminary arrangements for observing the total solar eclipse on December 22 near Africa involve a conference at the Navy Department. Attendees include Commodore John G. Walker, Bureaus head, Captain B. L. Phythian, naval observatory head, and Prof Simon Newcomb of the Nautical Almanac office.
