A terrible fire in Chicago on Deeco Day caused a stage blaze as a defective wire failed to protect spectators. The conflagration left 1,145 dead and many injured or missing, with Mayor Harrison urging quiet as sympathy poured in from around the world.
A lively tongue duel occurred yesterday morning on Front Street between a Shaker medicine man and a vendor of stones and wares. The crowd favored the Shaker while both used megaphones to project insults. The feud stems from licenses and street tricks, with ongoing public contempt for the Merchant's Street Fair. Walter McLaurin, a fourteen year old, is critically ill with typhoid at his father's Brookhaven home. recovery hoped.
The Y M C A reception featured string music and refreshments served by Secretary Younts. J R Anderson plans a new livery stable near the Armory as his lease expires. M H L Ragsdale leaves Brookhaven for Kosciusko January 1, noted for musical talents and charitable work.
An amendment approved by Mississippi Governor Lane on January 1 101 alters the charter of the Moreton Wentworth Bank. It removes the word Parsons in the nineteenth and fourth paragraphs and changes the corporate name. The amendment takes effect upon governor approval.
