Stanely Swearenger was placed on preliminary trial for the killing of Gene Dickey at a Negro picnic twelve miles southwest of Bogue Chitto. About thirty witnesses were called. the defense contested every inch and the prisoner was remanded to jail without bail. Meantime, Russia and Japan near breaking off peace talks as indemnity disputes persist. President Roosevelt seeks peace, with negotiations resuming today.

Mary Williams disturbing the peace fined 2.50 and costs. Sam Barden disturbing the peace fined 10 dollars and costs. Louis Sperry Maulder bound over to Circuit Court in bond of 1,000 dollars.

Josie Smith Peace bond. Hagar Nichols Assault and battery fined 50 cents and costs. The Teachers Institute for Pike opened at Magnolia August 21 under Prof H P Hughes and M Le Bosse.
