The Mississippi Democracy at the state convention endorses free silver as the monetary standard, signaling a shift in party platform and rallying support among advocates for bimetallic policy nationwide.
Mississippi's Democratic convention gathers in Jackson with a large delegate presence. J. W. Cutter chairs the session. J. C. Tongstreet elected temporary chairman, then Gen. J. W. George as permanent chair. A. J. McLaurin wins the governorship by acclamation amid enthusiastic support, with J. I. Jones named lieutenant governor and other statewide officers nominated. The platform endorses bimetalism, opposition to trusts, and income tax changes, urging party unity.
In San Francisco fourteen jurors will be impaneled for the Theo dore Darrant case under a new California law allowing alternates in protracted trials. District Attorney Barnes will seek two alternates after the regular twelve are chosen. Alternate jurors have full privileges except voting or deliberating. This marks the first use of the provision designed to prevent delays from sickness or death.
The Lakeside gathering in August heard Gen Warner and Mr Hore discuss gold and silver value, money parity, and the nation's economic course. Propositions warned that debt, inflation, and a shifting standard threaten free institutions, with debate touching labor, law, and constitutional money limits.

The Pall Mall Gazette reports that during a royal visit to a torpedo boat destroyer last week the furnace crown cracked minutes after landing. If it had failed at full speed the boiler would have burst. The Charger was at speed, reaching twenty seven knots, with princes on board. Gun trunks planned for that day were postponed.
In New York by Aug the Brotherhood of Tailors strike nears end with 535 of 6 percent contractors furnishing required bonds ensuring a one year compliance. The move covers about 14,000 workers returning to work under the agreement.
A genuine case of hydrophobia with fatal symptoms is reported from Waynesburg. Last May Perry Ammons was bitten by his own dog Tuesday he was taken ill and died in great agony yesterday morning. Several directors in attendance guided the proceedings.
