Martyr to science Clara Maas dies from yellow fever test
Clara Louise Maas, a 24 year old American nurse from East Orange and Newark German Hospital graduate, died in Cuba August 1900 after volunteering for an inoculation trial to test treated mosquitoes for yellow fever. She served in the Spanish American War and in Manila before dying in Cuba.

Lincoln County Mississippi Board of Supervisors met August 9 1905 with full attendance. Petitions for a public road from Heucks Retreat to Brookhaven and Beauvoir Road near Pearl River were received and filed for 80 days. Personal assessment of Geo Bowsky reduced from 5000 to 1800 dollars. Board authorized borrowing 5000 dollars to cover county expenses excluding judiciary, with warrants bearing 6 percent interest due Jan 1 1906, to be repaid from this year’s tax receipts. A special tax may be levied to repay the loan. Meeting adjourned to next morning at 9. Z P Jones President.

Despondent Neighbor’s Suicide Attempts Near Town
Mr. Lem Berry a resident about three miles northeast of town attempted suicide twice on Thursday driven by fear of starvation. He seized a shotgun but was restrained as the weapon discharged into a wall. Berry escaped serious injury and was taken to Silver Creek for care.
