Sheriff Applewhite Defies Mob in Brookhaven Case
In Lincoln County Mississippi Sheriff RC Applewhite ordered Brookhaven Military Company to report to him to prevent a lynching of a prisoner. The Brookhaven Leader notes the move as a needed deterrent to mob rule and urges governors and sheriffs to seek militia aid when lynching threats rise. The incident followed the confinement of the Wally brothers and their relative in Meadville bound for safety, with grand juries indicting them for murder.
