West Suburban Schools Face Teacher Shortage Crisis
Nineteen west suburban superintendents met at the White House in LaGrange to plan for a teacher shortage the group says will deepen next year. They cited a need for 169 teachers, 82 of them additions, to handle enrollment increases and staffing at the Forest Road school opening in fall. Northern Illinois State College officials warn 70 colleges will graduate only 2,600 elementary teachers in 1950, signaling a national crisis that could force half-time sessions or closures.
