Mansfield's Undertakers extended their undefeated streak to 10 wins in the American Legion softball league after the first round. Avon Cleaners and Grand Sweet Shop trailed in second with 7-2 records, while Butkavich's Tavern stood fourth at 6-2. Candlelight Lounge saw a five game win streak end in a 7-5 loss to Grand Sweet Shop, then rebounded with a 4-0 win over Avon Cleaners. The VFW and Bowl-Mor produced a 28-18 slugfest, and North River Sub AC edged Bowl-Mor 12-11. Playoffs Loom June 20 with matchups including Hayors Motors versus VFW, Candlelight Lounge against Preokfield AC, and Keon Cleaners versus Bowl-Mor. Standings shown as of Monday.
Mr and Mrs Charles Husa of So Fairview avenue host a Teat Friends of Mr and Mrs William Sievers and family Saturday evening June 21 at 7 pm. Sievers formerly lived in Brookfield and moved to Sand Views about three years ago where he works for the telephone company. The Sievers family were active in the Methodist church and in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts during their Brookfield residence.
Residents and officials clash over American Brakeshoe plans to rezone near Brookfield. Brookfield and LaGrange Park leaders warn heavy industry would hurt housing values and tax proceeds. Opponents cite smoke concerns and risk to nearby schools while urging preservation of single family areas.
Mr and Mrs George Polivka of Naperville hosted about 20 guests at Willow Farm Dairy for son Jim Polivka's recent LTHS graduation. The evening featured a three piece band, a milked barn setting, and a ceremonial record of each couple as they danced. Jim, a former Corraline LaGrange president, earned high honors and the Senior Spouses Award.
John Liska of 4207 Maple Avenue plans to attend the National Weightlifting Meet in Chicago. The contests are scheduled for June 25 at Lane Tech High School.
More than 600 boys and girls visited the Chicago Zoological Park for Kiwanis Zoo Day hosted by Brookfield Kiwanis. Monmouth Kiwanis won the prize for bringing 43 children, a pair of Australian parakeets presented by Robert Bean to Wade Williams. Other clubs contributed counts, and past lieutenant governor Mayer Hayford spoke, with Secretary Ben Block and Stanley Land noted among officials. A picnic, community singing, and a reptile tale by Robert Smedger followed the program.
Pastor Bixler enjoyed a joyful Brookfield reunion with his son Dean a Wheaton college junior. Judge Melville hosted the fish dinner a Kiwanis annual feature with guests Mrs Josephine M Myers and Mrs H L Paden present. Wes Kurth led the meeting as club president amid several former presidents in attendance.
