Brookfield switches gas lamps to electric lighting plan
About 250 electric street lights have been installed in Brookfield since the first on McCormick avenue on Feb 1 1949. The village began with street corners and moved in five groups to replace gas lamps, including the annexed section south of Shields avenue. Costs dropped from 1.30 to 1.18 dollars per lamp per month, prompting adoption at the January 19 1949 trustees meeting. The project faced engineering and financial challenges to maximize service while keeping costs down.
