Brookfield Water Commission Defends Rates in Letter
Commissioner for the Village of Brookfield writes to The Magnet to dispute a Chicago Sun-Times based article alleging profiteering by the Brookfield North Riverside Water commission. He explains rates are volume based, with 12 to 17 cents per 1000 gallons, average around 15.42 cents, and stresses the sinking fund and bond retirements. He urges public access to monthly financial reports to show no profit motive and asks for disclosure to clarify citizen understanding.

The piece notes a 15 percent travel tax during wartime, $4.61 federal tax on a New York to Chicago coach trip, and a 3 cent freight tax per dollar, totaling over $300 million annually. It argues the tax serves no purpose postwar and burdens households with ongoing government revenue.
