Vindication saga ties Gross to Cyrano dispute at turn of century
The Brookfield real estate pioneer Samuel Eb erly Gross pursued a $1 verdict against French playwright Rostand over alleged plagiarism of his The Merchant Prince of Cornville, a case revived by the Cyrano de Bergerac premiere. Verdict in 1902 sided with nominal damages, with Rostand never appearing. Gross, a Civil War veteran turned broker, claimed ties to France and led a long legal and business life around East and West Grossdale and nearby suburbs before retiring to Battle Creek, Michigan.
