A Brookfield columnist salutes Gale Gross for creating and leading the local Youth Center, growing membership from 13 to nearly 200, and facing 1947 challenges. Chicago city council authorized Commissioner Oscar Hewitt to enter a ten year contract with McCook to supply up to 3 million gallons daily. Rates target residents within the Sanitary District at 60 cents per 1,000 cubic feet and 1.50 per 1,000 outside. Major customers include Reynolds Metals and Electro Motive with plans to expand via Brookfield-North Riverside connections. Lyons and Riverside water purchases await final approval.
Carol Smith will present the 75th seasonal Messiah with the Chicago Orchestra Sunday December 3 at the hall. The Brookfield event features the lovel songbird accompanied by a full orchestra in a classic holiday performance.
Members of the Congress Park association and Hollywood Community House grounds committee note a village board entry: a $32.92 water bill charged to L Morrell Gross, former village attorney, for a year’s water supply in his park at Grant and Sunnyside, paid by request of Mr Gross. The village authorities acted on his request.
Reverend Calvin Ukena resigns after a year and a half at Hollywood Presbyterian Church. He will leave December 22 and assume duties at First Presbyterian Church of Ithaca, Michigan, on January 15 to fill duties for a county seat congregation lacking a minister. The Ithaca church, with a remodelled building and pipe organ, seeks expansion as Dr. Wr. DuBourdieu of Chicago collaborates with the new pastor.
The 1946 Brookfield year blended peace at home with national unrest. Voters failed a $130,000 village hall bond. Kiwanis and The Magnet pushed for a park district. Veterans returned, real estate boomed, prices rose, meat lines faded, and a strike era headline involved Electro Motor with violence and an injunction. Lt Calvin Walker, Brookfield’s top air ace, was killed over Niert Germany.
Funeral services were held at 10 30 Monday morning from the Mansfield chapel on Grand Blvd for Otto Bruno 81 of 3404 Grand Blvd The Rev George Vulgaris officiated and interment was in Chapel Hill Gardens He died at his home Saturday morning It was the second death in the family this year as his son Alex died in August He lived at the same Brookfield address for 41 years Survived by widow Louise three sons Paul F Edward W and William H three daughters Clara Schindler Elsa Whitney and Louise Westerman five grandchildren and two great grandchildren
Daniel Wettersten, four, Brookfield’s third polio victim, died within nine hours of first symptoms. Services were held at Mansfield Funeral Home with Rev. Wakefield officiating. He is survived by his parents Henry and Lillian and two sisters. Health officer notes another local victim and county totals reach 258 cases and 17 deaths, excluding Chicago.
Reverend Peter Deyneka, a veteran missionary, returns from a three month Europe tour and will speak at the Missionary Night program on January 1 at 7 45 p m at the Brook Church.
