The treasurer's office reports incomplete tax collection but expects about 275 000 to be in the treasury by Saturday night while the amount due is near 297 000. Banks easing and loans negotiated may avert a year end breakdown if disbursements are economical. The road repair fund remains overdrawn by about 19 000 with many bills due. In a nine bid contest Lew Shank won Terre Haute mayoralty by about 20000 votes, while Dan Roberts is described as a young Republican. Muncie defeated Moses Leopold for mayor by 48 votes. South Bend voted Republican with E E Seebirt elected mayor. Valparaiso chose Democrat J D Stoner, Lafayette leans Republican, and Rensselaer ousted the Republican head with Jay Stockton Democrat winning by 48. F D Burchard Democrat was elected treasurer by 80 votes as the rest of the ticket leaned Republican. Civic Pride and Citizens Party clash in Kentland with Civic Pride prevailing. Bandits Try Bank Robbery At Goodland
Yeggs tried to blast into the Trust and Savings Bank at Goodland Tuesday night using a drill and a dope. A bank vault defense delayed them as a Night Watch engine crew member inside the C and E T tracks area observed the event and the robbers, unmasked, were identified by the engineer. No loot was secured.
Veteran Soldier Charles Waling Dies at Brook Home
Charles Waling, a Civil War veteran who came from England as a lad, died Tuesday morning at his Brook home after years of illness. He served in the 64th Illinois Veteran Volunteer Infantry and Yates Sharpshooters, earned a prized flag for being the youngest enlisted soldier in New He, and lived in Brook for 50 years. Funeral services were held Thursday at the A. B. Church with Rev. Snyder officiating and burial in Brook Cemetery.
