Tuskegee Institute records show four lynchings in the United States during the first six months of 1937 all of them black victims. Offenses cited include murder three cases and rape one. States listed with counts are Alabama one and Mississippi two. Georgia and others not fully clear.
Two Southeast Texas cases of spotted fever were diagnosed by Dr. R R Spencer of the U S Public Health Service while he visited San Antonio at the request of State Health Officer Dr Geo W Cox. One case was fatal. The report marks the first official Texas finding of the tick borne disease. The article notes incubation, tick behavior, and the need for precautionary measures.
The Fourth of July fell on Sunday and brought a quiet day in Christoval. Residents and visiting relatives gathered at Christoval with the Tranies and families including Mr. and Mrs. Whitt of San Angelo, Charley Baker and wife, B A Bel and family, S Higginbotham and family, Ou Smith and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Chytus Smith among others.
Wojtek Bros owners of the Texas theatre install an air cooling system in their show house. The cooling system is a decided improvement for patrons offering cool comfort during an hour of entertainment, placing the Texas theatre’s standards with larger city show houses.
Miss Ava Lee Myrick of Monahans visits Miss Bernice Bannowsky. Myrick returns from an extended trip to the eastern states where a tick infection risk is noted. Three prevention measures for spotted fever include avoiding ticks, promptly removing them, or vaccination though the vaccine is not readily available.
I D McDonald longtime Tennyson resident dies at sister L Y Harrell's home in Tennyson. Funeral services held after religious rites. interment at Mount Victor cemetery. Born February 16, 1880, he moved from Mason to Tom Green counties and later Coke county where he lived until death. Survived by three brothers W S McDonald Granite OK B F Portersville CA J A McDonald Tennyson and three sisters Mrs Morey Haynes Mrs Emily Hudspeth Lawton OK and Mrs L Y Harrell Tennyson plus many nephews and nieces. He joined the Baptist church in Mason county. Sympathy sent to the family.
