Mrs M A Butner with daughter Betty hosted a Tuesday afternoon shower four miles north of Bronte for Mrs Will Thomason formerly Miss Mildred Heidel. Guests brought recipe gifts and watched as the honoree unwrapped them. Mrs Geo Thomas read two pieces. The honey moon express presented gifts before the honoree. The couple’s cake was cut and each guest received a slice with their fortune. Forty guests attended cake and cream refreshments.
Sam Russell of Robert Lee died Tuesday afternoon in San Angelo after an operation. He had worked loading government cattle at Bronte, fell ill, and was taken home to Robert Lee before transfer to the San Angelo hospital. He served as Coke County sheriff for years and was part of a long established local family. A widow and four children survive, with services held at Robert Lee Methodist Church and burial in Robert Lee Cemetery.
Washington D C Jesse H Jones chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation says bank deposits were the safest investments during the 1431 32 bank closings. He notes depositors may recover about 65 percent on average while stockholders lose all plus assessments. Government bonds remain the only safer holding.
F M Law president of the American Bankers Association told the American Institute of Banking that there is no good reason for pessimism as banking endures with proper management. He cited the institute’s 219 active chapters, 60,000 members, and 38,000 students as evidence of education shaping sound banking practices. He urged bankers to adapt to change and embrace hard work, service to depositors and stockholders, and a forward look toward future opportunities.
Banks and trust companies on May 31 had repaid 61 percent or 967,959,623.08 dollars of the 1,681,357,085.08 dollars borrowed from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation since its establishment on February 3, 1938.
The July bulletin notes improved condition of operating banks especially in country districts. Indebtedness to Federal Reserve Banks and to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation has declined, with funds freed for depositors from closed banks. Bank loans frozen earlier are being repaid, signaling strengthening banking positions nationwide.
