Cool Damp Weather Ends Summer Heat Wave
Cooler weather moves in ending a hot season that stretched into mid September. About a half inch of rain fell last weekend and a shower Wednesday morning cooled conditions. Daytime highs are in the 80s and overnight lows drop into the 60s.

Oscar Isbell Dies Of Gunshot Wound
Oscar Isbell 57 died Monday afternoon from a gunshot wound at his home west of Brookshire in Coke County. Justice of the Peace J T Liles ruled the death from loss of blood due to personal safety related gunshot wounds. Funeral rites were held Wednesday at Norton Cemetery. He had been indicted by a Runnels County grand jury on a felony theft charge two weeks earlier. Survivors include his wife Winnie Waddell and his mother Mrs Jack Isbell of Simpson, plus his brother Jack Isbell of May.

Bronte Braves End Season With 15 Inning Loss
The Bronte Braves finished their season with a 15 inning defeat to the Robert Lee Rabbit Twisters by 38 runs. Pitcher Norman Weatherford worked all 15 innings with about 25 strikeouts. The team played 18 games, winning 12, as talks arise about a regional league including San Angelo Robert Lee Bronte Ballinger and Winters.

Bronte Jail Faces Weekend Overcrowding Report
Bronte two cell jail reached capacity last weekend with two inmates. One man charged with driving while intoxicated and released on bond. Another held for public intoxication and released after pleading guilty and fined. Deputy Sheriff Parker and Patrolman Nixon investigated. In Creek Lake Lester Arthur Phillips of Sweetwater faced DWI after a 1959 Dodge collided with a 1961 Oldsmobile driven by Frederick R. Rogers of Corpus Christi. Both drivers unharmed. Thomas Rufus Bray of Abilene picked up around 11 am Sunday and charged with public intoxication.

The Bronte Shorthorns junior football team defeated Loraine 34 to 14 Tuesday night at Loraine. Doug McCutchen scored all five touchdowns and added a two-point conversion. He rushed 56, 50, 17, 68 and 55 yards for the scores. Coach Cecil Toliver praised McCutchen, Masterson, Don Hageman, Jerry Parker and Tim Moore for strong work. Next game is October 1 at Trent. next Tuesday is an open date.
