Pitting Boosts Water Infiltration on Coke District Range
Walker outlines a soil and water conservation plan with grass seeding. Metapeake Ranch owner B St George Tucker uses pitted rangeland to improve infiltration and reduce runoff. 30 inches of April rain yielded water penetration over 30 inches on pitted land versus 6 to 8 on unpitted. Gene Gibson notes one inch of water wets about six inches of soil, so pitted land absorbs about five inches while unpitted soaks one inch. runoff drops from five inches to about one inch. Thirty landowners in Coke Soil Conservation District bought 2000 pounds of guar seed to enrich soil as part of a cooperative plan.
