Texas House takes up tax bill amid Senate passage of 662.3 million measure
The House action follows Senate approval 22 to 9 of HB 730 after six defeated attempts to add a corporation profits levy. The bill raises sales tax to 4 percent, expands motor vehicle sales tax, lifts franchise tax to 4.50 per 1000, increases cigarette and gasoline taxes, and adds diesel and beer levies. A conference committee will reconcile differences, and hotel room and other taxes were stripped.
