The Karen-Gayl Hospital in Bronte was opened August 5, 1947 by J M Rippetoe as the first Coke County hospital. Dr. John R Harris joined in July 1947 and later bought the hospital, expanding it in 1951 to 15 beds and adding wings, air conditioning, and new facilities, now able to care for 23 patients while serving general medical needs.
