Training Young Trees After Transplanting
The lower part of the trunk should be kept clear after transplanting and the tree should be headed to develop a permanent head. Temporary branches allowed in the first two or three years must be removed to form a strong framework at six to eight feet above ground.
Pecan Trees Should Be Started Right Away
Advice from Mrs. Vernemma Barron on starting pecan trees, including root growth, top pruning by about one third, and the need for ample moisture in the first growing season. Soak soil to root depth every two weeks in dry weather, protect against sunscald, and cover wet soil with dry soil or a straw amulet to conserve moisture.
Strong Framework Pecan Trees For Better Cropping
The framework should have four to six main branches arranged in spirals around the central leader. Maintain 12 to 18 inches between branches and remove narrow crotches or weak forks that may split later. Dart scars on the site matter, and proper care yields a beautiful tree with a fine crop.
