Eighth Air Force personnel, 185000 strong, were lauded by Lt Gen James H Doolittle after VE Day. Master Sgt Archie Pittman and Pvt Leroy Ellis were named among the praised airmen. Doolittle credited their unit with massive achievements including hundreds of thousands of bombs dropped and thousands of enemy aircraft shot down in a long war effort.
