Weaning weights rise with hybrid vigor in cross calves
Walter Kruse of the A and M station notes last 11 years average weaning weight of straight bred calves at Mc Gregor is 602 pounds. Three breed cross calves average 460 pounds at 180 days. First cross calves with FD mothers average 420 pounds. The weight gain is attributed to hybrid vigor from the third breed bull. breeding back to a parent breed reduces vigor.
