New Year Brings Freezing Weather Across Regions
The New Year 1958 opened with record cold as a cold dry air mass moved in on New Year’s Eve. Forecasts predicted temperatures around 20 degrees for early January 1 with readings in the mid forties later, then dipping back to the 20s Wednesday night. A warming trend was expected by Friday.

Leta Stroud Died in San Angelo Hospital
Former Coke resident Leta Stroud died at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo after a Dec 16 heart attack. Funeral services were held Dec 29 at First Baptist Church Robert Lee, with burial in Robert Lee cemetery. She was survived by two sons Delmir and Julian Stroud of Midland, two brothers Earl and Artell Roberts, and three sisters Calvin Wallace Emory Davis and Oda Benton.

Coke County home demonstration club members run a fund raising concession at the Livestock Show in Robert Lee on January 6 from 8 a.m. until close, selling sandwiches hot dogs homemade candy pies cakes and coffee. Mrs. Pat Rives Mrs. Glenn Waldrop and Mrs. C E Arrott lead food arrangements. HD 4 H and other exhibits will be in the Recreation Building with entry by 10 a.m. and pickup after 3 p.m. Public invited to view. Local guests include Mr and Mrs Cody Wilson of Pasadena Texas who visited the Lammers home over Christmas.

Fay Moore hosted visiting nephew Don Buckman and friends Leon Sharp of Carlsbad, a former Bronte Church of Christ minister. Moore’s family spent part of the holidays with Vernon parents while Robert L. Buckman toured Rice University, Johnny Smith visited from Hardin-Simmons, and Caperton and Kirkland kin returned from Lubbock for Christmas. Fort Worth and Vernon guests joined the family gatherings.
