Austin Texas February 25 Dr Geo W Cox State Health Officer warns rheumatic fever is a leading killer of youths between ages 10 and 15 and ranks high for ages 15 to 24 with tuberculosis ahead only in older groups He urges improved childhood death data and heightened awareness of the disease.
Dr. Cox warns that diagnosing rheumatic fever is difficult and requires prolonged physician supervision. Early signs may be subtle such as pallor fatigue and loss of appetite, with heart involvement common. Recurrent attacks are common and duration can span months to years, making bed rest during infection essential.
