Smith Proves Conservation Program Can Be Most Successful in Coke County
Otis Smith of Bronte transformed 50 acres east of Hayrick Mountain in Coke County under the Great Plains Conservation Program. Deep root plowing and range seeding with grasses reduced dense brush and boosted yield from 500 lb per acre to 5,000 lb per acre in one year. The project, started February 1959 with SCS supervision, cost $16 per acre with $9 subsidized by the federal government, and the land now sustains grazing with yields about ten times prior production.
