Texas Faces Deepening Teacher Shortage in 1947 Survey
The Texas State Teachers Association released a survey from 813 superintendents covering 33,058 teaching positions. Vacancies total 4,324 or 12.7 percent, with rural schools hit hardest at over 17 percent. City districts largely avoided cuts due to raised salaries, but overall shortages threaten one tenth of classrooms without higher state and local funding. President Elizabeth Koch calls for increased state support to raise teacher salaries as the top legislative goal.
