In March 1018 at the Post Office in Gente under congressional acts, girls in Homemaking plan to raise food due to shortages of fresh produce and canned goods. Factors include wartime food supply, labor scarcity, less machinery, and tin for canning, with gardens seen as a key to partial self sufficiency.
Governor Coke Stevenson proclaims April 4 to 10 as Health and Clean-Up Week in Texas. Dr Geo W Cox State Health Officer urges thorough house cleaning and removal of waste to curb disease and fire hazards, noting scrap collection supports the war effort and national health goals. Mrs Alto Lee of Maverick recovered from surgery and is reported doing well at Ballinger hospital.
