Curious Habits of Water Spiders
London Standard reports on water spiders that carry air down during dives. One spider reportedly stayed under for forty five minutes. A nest forms underwater like a diving bell, attached to plant stems, filled with air as the spider transfers air bubbles down and then encloses a bubble under its body to descend. The nest houses eggs in a cocoon, protecting them from flies while underwater. The spiders appear as silver balls underwater, with air bubbles clinging to their hairs. They breathe through small holes along the body and can use surface air bubbles for breathing.
