The Air Force Academy in Colorado enters its second year with 306 sworn in July 11, 1955. Of 244 remaining, eight academic failures and nine turned back for academic deficiency. others left for lack of desire, medical or conduct issues. Freshmen entering July 9 number 295. Construction at the Colorado Springs site costs 126 million dollars and aims for a permanent academy ready by September.

Town Council Adopts Highway Safety Plan
The Town Council approved a townwide highway safety program after a safety committee report. Police Chief Ferrara Fire Chief Rishe and Supt Edward Fitzgerald urged augmenting the local committee and starting citizen participation. Bruno said the program would improve driving habits and noted vandalism and property theft on the Common. The council also considered condemning Silver Creek property and proclaimed Red Feather Day for October 21 and UN Day observance for October 24.

Ed Kunz and a Bristol watchmaker’s enduring legacy
Ed Kunz retires after 57 years in Bristol’s jewelry trade, most of them at 469 Hope Street. He began in 1899 after responding to Stevens & Co. ad in Bristol, Rhode Island, under boss Col Daniel Stevens, a forceful mentor who valued Napoleonic relics and a vast military button collection. Kunz preserves items from Stevens including authentic Napoleonic lace and a star, kept safe after years in the café section of the shop, a testament to a long downtown business friendship and a life in watchmaking.

Dahl employees travel to New York for trade exhibit
The George W. Dahl Co. sent its 20 employees from Providence to the International Automation Conference and Exhibit in New York City. They departed at 7:45 a.m. and returned by 10 p.m., meeting firm sales representatives and viewing other manufacturers' products. A company-financed trip was publicly thanked by a spokesman who called the excursion wonderful.

Bristol Chamber endorses land condemnation for filling station site
The Bristol Chamber of Commerce backed condemning land along Silver Creek for a future filling station and urged the Historical Society to accept and restore the Bosworth House. New officers were elected: Albert Finger president, Charles M Connery first VP, Morris Caizzi second VP, Herbert Eisenstadt secretary, Ella O Millard treasurer. The group also asked the Army Corps of Engineers to add a Bristol Harbor breakwater to Narragansett Bay hurricane protection plan and will attend a Newport hearing on October 2 to press for waterfront business needs.

Bishop Urges Clarity On Trinity Church Zoning Letter

Missile Battery To Arrive Here About Oct 15
The Nike guided missile battery, to be stationed here next month, was toured by its commander and Lt Col Marcus Parsons. First Lt. Nelson Legette and Lt. Loeffler inspected the launcher at the Ferry and radar at Mt. Hope, meeting town officials. The battery is slated to occupy sites around Oct. 15, about two weeks later than planned due to ongoing construction. A zoning-board hearing on 16 nearby homes occurred five days prior.
