Legion Champs Defeat C and A in Exhibition

Bristol’s Kearney Post American Legion champions beat Collins and Aikman Corp. 3 to 0 at Guiteras Field in an exhibition. Only 400 spectators paid 125 dollars. C&A managed three hits. the Legion had one hit, a double by Dick Cordeirde.

Forty and Eight Meet in Bristol County Officers to be Named

Bristol County Voiture No. 1188 Forty and Eight will meet this evening at 8 at Kearney Post Home on Franklin street. Appointive officers for the ensuing year will be named and plans laid for installation of officers and new committees. Chef de Gare elect Angelo Piccerelli will preside with a social hour and refreshments following the promenade.

Bristol Rangers Retain Rhode Island Drum Corps Title

The Bristol Rangers Drum and Bugle Corps won the Rhode Island state championship for the third straight year. They secured the senior male division title with top marks in appearance, playing, and drum major. Ennis Bisbane won bugling and Harry Sousa won modern bass drumming. They proceed to Waterbury Connecticut for the Northeastern States Championships on September 30.

Bristol Boy Scout Drum Corps Captures State Junior Title

The Bristol Boy Scout Drum and Bugle Corps won the State Junior Division championship at Norwood Massachusetts, marking their second straight junior crown. They swept all junior male events and earned several individual awards. They next head to Waterbury Connecticut for the Northeastern States Championship and to Springfield Massachusetts for the Annual Junior Musical Festival.

Bristol Firemen Discuss Memorial Proposal Among Four Companies

Representatives of three Bristol volunteer fire companies met at Hy Vaulion Station to review a memorial for firefighters. Memorial Committee secretary Orlando J. Bisbane said two companies had approved using carnival funds for the project. Ever Ready was absent and sent a letter. Defiance abstained awaiting Ever Ready action. The committee reported progress and the plan to seek full participation from all four crews. An Oct. 9 meeting was set to reconvene and again seek votes.

Prudence Island lab fund killed by House committee

The House conference committee rejected the Senate approved 24.5 million dollar foot-and-mouth disease research lab on Prudence Island as part of a 16 million dollar supplemental bill. The move ends the effort for now with no renewed funding expected this session.

Wounded Cavalryman John Sylvester in Tokio Hospital

Pfc John DeWitt Sylvester of the US Army First Cavalry Division was wounded in Korea on Sept 4 and is recovering at Tokyo General Hospital Japan. A Sept 11 letter from Tokio says he is feeling grand and reading well. He joined the Army in 1948, previously worked in Bristol and earned an Eagle Scout rank in April 1948.
