John Howard Manchester Dies Prominent Bristol Leader

John Howard Manchester, longtime Bristol business and civic figure, died yesterday at his home 115 Bradford Street following heart disease. Born March 24, 1842, he built a 40 year tin and sheet iron business, led local gas utilities, served on town and school committees, and was active in Freemasonry. He leaves wife Emily Greene, two sons Charles and William, four grandchildren, and will be buried Sunday at North Cemetery after a 2 PM funeral at St Michael's Church.

Bristol K of C Holds Annual Election and War Service Notice

Thomas J Tobin was re elected Grand Knight of Bristol Council 379 Knights of Columbus at the annual election held Wednesday evening. A reception for members in the army or drafted was planned for Monday night. Eight members are in active service, four in each branch, with seven more drafted. Bristol Council contributed 1000 to the War Camp Fund and ranked third in the state. Officer installations set for October 10.

Bristol Boy Re-Enlists In Aviation Service

Rear Admiral John R. Edwards reports his son John R. Edwards Jr. re enlisted as an aviation student with the American contingent in Tours France after six months at the front. He passed mental and physical exams on August 20 and will undergo four to six months of training for a commission as First Lieutenant.

Colt Farm Jerseys Win Big at Syracuse State Fair

Colt Farm Jerseys capture 14 of 15 first premiums at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, defeating the $15,000 bull and last year’s grand champions. The herd crowns Bristol as top Jersey cattle herd this year with a grand champion cow and bull. Berkshire hogs also win top prizes, with a grand champion boar bred at Colt Farm. Next shows include Trenton New Jersey and Brockton Massachusetts as Bristol officials invite support.

Small Fire at Herreshoff Plant Quickly Extinguished

A small fire broke out on the west side of the water tower at Herreshoff Manufacturing yesterday afternoon shortly after 1 o'clock. The blaze near an outside smoke stack was subdued by the company fire department led by Chief A W Hathaway after a four foot square wooden tower section was cut open. The town auto fire truck responded to the alarm but was recalled moments after leaving the N I R Co works.
